Preparing a Boat for Storage
Properly storing your boat is essential to keeping it in great condition, whether you're putting it in long-term storage or just seasonal storage for winter or summer. If you're setting up a boat for winter, taking the right precautions to winterize your boat can help prevent damage from freezing temperatures. Even in warmer climates, proper preparation can help protect your boat from moisture, pests, and sun exposure. Follow these steps to preserve your boat during the off-season.
Choose your boat parking space based on the size of your vehicle and your storage preferences.
Drain all water from the boat, including the bilge, live wells, and ballast tanks.
Wash, wax, and buff the boat's exterior to help prevent damage.
Clean the interior of the boat and remove perishable items, electronics, and valuables.
Flush the plumbing systems (including freshwater and waste systems) and add antifreeze if necessary.
Winterize the motor by changing the oil, flushing with antifreeze (if needed), and fogging the engine.
Treat the fuel by adding a stabilizer and running the engine to circulate it.
Remove the boat's battery and propeller to prevent damage.
If you'll be storing your boat outdoors, put a boat cover or slip on it for protection from the elements.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR STORAGE
Properly storing your vehicle is essential to keeping it in great condition, whether you're putting it in long-term storage or just seasonal storage for winter or summer.
When putting a car away into long-term vehicle storage, a good cleaning is highly recommended. This is a simple step that protects your car from buildup that could damage the paint and lead to rust.
Especially if storing your car long term, you’ll need a plan to avoid flat spots on your tires. If you’re able to, simply starting the car and driving it periodically can help to avoid this. If that’s not an option, there are products like tire-saving ramps that will help to keep your tires round.
This is especially important when storing a car over the winter. If a battery sits in the cold, and the car isn’t used for an extended period of time, it will lose its charge. You can use a trickle charger at home to make sure that it’s ready to go when you take your car out of storage.
It’s best to take all precautions to keep rodents out of your car if it’s going to be sitting unused for a while. Covering the exhaust pipe and air intake is recommended. You can also set traps inside of your storage unit to stop rodents before they make it to the vehicle.
For outdoor car storage, a cover is essential. An auto cover protects your vehicle from both sun and precipitation. Both of these can do extensive damage if a car is stored outside for long periods of time. Some who use indoor storage even opt to use a car cover for added protection from dust.
For long-term car storage, changing the oil can keep your car in great condition. Old oil can have contaminants that damage the engine over an extended period of time.
